Defence Minister Wayne Mapp will apologise to the family of airman Stevin Creeggan after incorrectly announcing to media that the sole survivor of the air force helicopter crash about 40km north of Wellington on Sunday had died.

Dr Mapp said he had been given incorrect information by the vice-chief of the Defence Force, Rear Admiral Jack Steer and Police Commissioner Howard Broad, The Dominion Post reported.

Sergeant Creeggan was badly injured when an air force Iroquois crashed into a hill at Pukerua Bay as it headed from Ohakea air base for an Anzac Day dawn flypast in Wellington.

Flying Officer Daniel Stephen Gregory, 28, Flight Lieutenant Hayden Peter Madsen, 33, and Corporal Benjamin Andrew Carson, 25, were killed in the crash.

Sgt Creeggan's brother Mark hit out against the minister on his Facebook page demanding he front up to the family he put through hell.

Dr Mapp said he would contact Mark Creeggan and seek a meeting with the family "as soon as convenient for them, to apologise face to face".
