Stop-go case: Quinton Winders lodges appeal

The man convicted of killing stop-go worker George Taiaroa has appealed both his conviction and sentence.

A Court of Appeal spokesman confirmed an appeal had been lodged by Quinton Winders against both the murder conviction, and the sentence of life in prison with a non-parole period of 17 years.

Mr Taiaroa, 65, was shot dead while operating a stop-go sign at roadworks in Atiamuri in 2013.

Winders was found guilty of the murder in September 2016 after a five-week trial in the High Court at Rotorua. He was sentenced in December.

A date for the appeal hearing had not yet been set.

The appeal was lodged on December 22.
