A Leopard seal pup which spent its short life on a Dunedin beach last year has found its final resting place at the Otago Museum.
The pup was born in the shallows at Saint Kilda Beach - the first leopard seal pup known to have been born on the New Zealand mainland since the 1970s.
But it failed to thrive, and was euthanised after being assessed.
The pup, named Kana, has been unveiled at the Otago Museum's HD Skinner annex, and will eventually be displayed.
Researchers say she's probably taught them the most of any leopard seal in New Zealand so far.
It underwent a full series of MRI and CT scans, giving new knowledge about the early life stages of the leopard seal.
Doc says the number of sea leopard sightings in New Zealand has increased markedly in the last decade, but it's unclear what's behind the increase in sightings.
