Thieves target Nth Dunedin

Police are seeking witnesses to a crime spree in North Dunedin after houses and cars were broken into last night.

Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield, of Dunedin, said 15 bottles of perfume, a laptop and speakers were stolen from two houses in Leith St between 9pm and 10.30pm.

The doors of both homes were unlocked at the time and residents were sleeping while the burglaries took place, he said.

There was a "strong suspicion" they were linked.

Overnight, seven vehicles in the car park behind Forsyth Barr Stadium were broken into. Police first received reports of this at 11.45pm.

Inquiries were continuing and owners were still being contacted, Snr Sgt Butterfield said.

It was not known what items had been taken.

At the same time, a man was seen breaking in to a vehicle in Leith St. He was described as Caucasian, tall, wearing a white cap and blue or dark hoodie.

A delay in the reporting of the offence resulted in officers not being able to find the man, Snr Sgt  Butterfield said.

"It is really important that people ring us if they see anything suspicious as it's our best opportunity to apprehend these people is soon after they have committed the offence.”

The crime times and vicinity indicated that all incidents could be linked.
