Ukrainian activist Olha Viazenko and her friends protest the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine.

The group meets in the Octagon in Dunedin every Saturday and plans to continue doing so until the war ends.

They started the weekly protest when the war began in February 2022.

Ms Viazenko said there continued to be much to do and say for their friends still in the country.

‘‘We hear of the constant bombing ... Kyiv remains the Russians’ main target and we can’t stop doing what we can.

‘‘People in Ukraine are tired, they cannot leave.’’

Ms Viazenko said they would be discussing with New Zealand banks why they had stopped giving aid money to Ukrainian charities.

‘‘It’s a step back for democracy.

‘‘We cannot send ... support to charities or relatives.’’

The conflict had now lasted longer than World War 1.

‘‘Russia is not going to stop and if Ukraine surrenders, that’s the end of us as a country.’’
