Last week, the council said that the opening of the South Dunedin Community Library had been ‘‘punctuated by positives’’ and the facilities had proven extremely popular.
For Dunedin mother Rebecca Fleury, the library was her and her two children’s ‘‘go-to spot’’.
‘‘We've switched, really, from the big one to this one, because there is more toys,’’ she said.
They first visited about a month ago and Mrs Fleury said she could not believe how many people were there.
In the facility’s first six months, more than 25,000 people visited, 980 signed up as members, 63,775 items had been borrowed and 80,622 items returned.
The final figure also indicated the library was a popular place to return books borrowed from the city’s other libraries.
City and South Dunedin Libraries manager Lynn Vare said there were 100 bookings for meeting rooms in February and March and the Taupuni Oro recording studio was also popular.
The library was proving very accessible for a range of people, including those with special needs and disabilities, she said.
‘‘We have a wonderful and diverse customer base, and many people tell us how much they love the space for its welcoming and calm atmosphere.
‘‘In short, the South Dunedin Community Library is both a hive of activity and a haven.’’
