A coroner will investigate the death of Czech tramper Ondrej Petr on the Routeburn Track in July.

The 27-year-old died soon after falling down a steep slope near Lake Mackenzie on July 28, after he and his partner Pavlina Pizova became disoriented in bad weather.

His body was recovered on August 26 and a postmortem carried out three days later.

Ministry of Justice senior media adviser Matt Torbit said the postmortem report would form part of an investigation into Mr Petr's death by coroner Anna Tutton.

It was too early to say how long the investigation would take, or whether an inquest would be held, Mr Torbit said.

Ms Pizova spent two nights out in the open and was rescued after spending 24 days alone in the Lake Mackenzie warden's hut.
