A groundswell of support has heartened the Maniototo Plunket group, which is facing some crucial decisions about its future.

Proposed changes to the group's parent body, as part of a national restructuring, which will have an impact on the group, prompted it to call a public meeting at the weekend.

''It was a really positive meeting and we'll go away now and think about the information before having a further meeting in a few weeks' time, to make a decision on our future,'' group secretary Kate Dowling said.

Plunket Otago area board president Georgina Dunstan was at the meeting to give details of the future options for the group, Mrs Dowling said.

These included remaining with Plunket, with some support from the national office, or ''going it alone'' by forming its own charitable trust, taking the funds raised by the group over the years.

''We're waiting to hear back from the national office about what support is available if we stay with Plunket and how we can ensure our money stays our money and we'll be liaising with them,'' she said.

About 30 people attended the meeting and a further 20 apologies were received. Those at the meeting represented a wide cross-section of the community and there was good support from former Plunket members.

''One thing that's come out of this - us calling the meeting - has been the goodwill and support we've received. There's been lots of interest shown by the community and that support will actually make us stronger,'' Mrs Dowling said.

Another thing highlighted was the support for Plunket as an organisation.
