Tom Latham was struck on the pads and was dismissed for one after a DRS review proved unsuccessful, before Kane Williamson was caught in the slips for four, leaving New Zealand at 15 for two.
Earlier New Zealand had bowled Pakistan out for 133 on the back of the best ever bowling figures on test debut for New Zealand from Colin de Grandhomme.
De Grandhomme took six wickets for 41 runs, while Tim Southee and Trent Boult took two wickets apiece as they tore through the Pakistan batting line-up.
After being put in to bat, Pakistan got through to 31, before Azhar Ali was bowled for 15. The second-wicket saw them get through to 53 before three quick wickets saw the momentum change. Sami Aslam fell for 19, before Babar Azam was caught for off an edge for seven.
De Grandhomme then took the key wicket of Younis Khan for two, leaving Misbah Ul-Haq and Asad Shafiq to offer some resistance, before being dismissed for 16. Safraz Ahmed was then removed for seven.
Ul-Haq went on to top-score with 31, but the lower order was unable to stem the flow of wickets.
Play began early today after yesterday was abandoned due to rain.
