Invercargill teen loses battle with meningitis

A two-month fight against meningococcal septicemia has ended for 18-year-old Sara Loo, of Invercargill.

Sara died on Monday afternoon at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital where she had been since early June.

Sara contracted meningococcal disease in May and was admitted to Southland Hospital in Invercargill before being flown to the intensive care unit at Dunedin Hospital.

While in Dunedin, both her legs were amputated below the knee and, after being transferred to Middlemore Hospital's burns unit early last month, one hand was amputated.

She continued to battle infection, but the family said despite the best efforts of the staff and the district health boards she died on Monday afternoon.

In a statement, family members said it was a time of great sadness for her family and friends and they requested their privacy be respected.

A spokeswoman for hospital staff said all those who had been involved in her care expressed their condolences.

James Hargest College principal Andy Wood said yesterday he was holding eulogy assemblies at the school.
