Netball South has named its coaching team for its 2017 Beko League title defence.

Joining head coach Georgie Salter are Dana Bond, Donna Wilkins and Lana Morrison, while John Mathias and Abby McKenzie have been named as observation coaches to attend training sessions.

Bond, from Eastern, will be the team’s assistant coach, former Silver Fern Wilkins will be a specialist coach and Dunedin’s Morrison the apprentice coach.

It was a chance for several emerging local coaches to be mentored by Salter, who had years of high-level coaching experience.

"That’s the reason I’m doing it, the chance to also coach the coaches," Salter said.

"I think it’s brilliant that we can do this."

Bond had previously been coached by Salter as a player and was looking forward to linking with her in a new capacity.

"Georgie is an inspiration, an amazing coach with very high standards," she said.

"She’s a book of knowledge so when you get an opportunity like this you’ve just got to grab it.

"The Performance Coach Programme last year was fantastic and gave us really good insights so it will be great to expand on what we’ve learned and apply it in a practical sense."

Wilkins was confident the team would again feature strongly in this year’s competition.

"The core of the team will be there and it will be exciting to see their growth in the second year. This competition will only get stronger and stronger."

The 16-person South squad selected in October will complete trials in Dunedin this weekend to secure a spot in the final team.

On Sunday, the squad will play the Southern Steel in a pre-season game in Oamaru at the Waitaki Recreation Centre at 10am.

The game is open to the public.
