A police spokeswoman said the car hit the tree on a traffic island in Princes St about 11.30am.
Two cars were involved in the crash, one of which had to be towed away.
Motorists had to drive around the tree for a time and the Dunedin City Council was called to remove it.
It was believed no-one was injured in the crash.
