A proposed feasibility study on the Clyde Historical Museum would help determine the future of the museum buildings, the Vincent Community Board (VCB)  heard yesterday.

The board  approved applications to the Central Lakes Trust for $62,043 and New Zealand Lotteries Commission for $41,362 for the study. No community board  money is being sought.

Central Otago District Council property and facilities officer Christina Martin had prepared a report earlier in the year about the three sites that make up the Clyde Museum. Of the museum’s  13 buildings, six  have been assessed as earthquake-prone.

The condition and ongoing management of the buildings by volunteers was becoming unsustainable and had prompted discussions about the museum’s future, Mrs Martin said.

A collections policy has already been created and adopted by Clyde Historic Museum Inc.

An application for a Lottery Environment and Heritage Grant for $41,500 for the next stage of the project, an engineering report, had been declined, but the Central Lakes Trust had indicated financial support for doing a strategic study for the museum first, Mrs Martin said.

The results of both the Central Lakes Trust and Lotteries applications would be known by December, and the study was scheduled to begin in January and be completed in August.

A further report about the study’s findings would be made to the VCB in October 2018.
