An outing on the Otago Peninsula for a Dunedin family ended dramatically when their car plunged 100m down a cliff.
Portobello Senior Constable Lox Kellas said the Pine Hill family had been visiting the disappearing gun em-placement at Taiaroa Head on Thursday afternoon, when a "brake or gear failure" resulted in their Nissan 200SX car rolling backwards, over the cliff.
It appeared a family member had gone to get a personal item and a camera, when the car rolled away.
No-one was hurt in the incident, but the same could not be said for the car, which was written off.
The car was winched to the beach at Harington Point, with the assistance of a local fisherman, before being removed yesterday afternoon.
