KiwiBuild Otago figures revealed

Queenstown will gain 2229 KiwiBuild homes and Dunedin will get 851 - if they all go where they are needed, a cabinet paper reveals.

The paper, released to Newshub, shows where KiwiBuild houses would be built if they were distributed based on need.

The Government's KiwiBuild programme promises 100,000 affordable homes to be built in New Zealand in the next 10 years.

The paper says if built based on need, 2229 would go to Queenstown, 851 to Dunedin and 1000 to Christchurch.

Only 5723 would be built in the South Island - 94,277, or 95%, going up north.

Auckland would get 61,339 -more than 60% of the total - and Wellington would get 12,975.

The paper suggested KiwiBuild houses could be more expensive than what was already available in some regions.

''For example in Gisborne, the lower quartile price is around $221,000, which is significantly below what we can deliver via KiwiBuild.''

This would lead to existing homes likely being ''substantially more attractive and accessible'' to first-home buyers than KiwiBuild homes in those regions.

KiwiBuild homes in Queenstown would cost $650,000 or less for a three-bedroom home, $600,000 or less for a two-bedroom and $500,000 or less for a one-bedroom home.
