An alleged drunk driver was caught by police at a Dunedin bottle store after fleeing the scene of a crash on Monday evening.
Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the man crashed his car on the State Highway 1 Caversham bypass,near the South Rd overbridge.
He fled the scene, leaving his vehicle on the motorway, but was seen by an off-duty police officer who gave chase, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.
A police dog team was alerted and shortly afterwards the man was caught at Super Liquor Andersons Bay.
The 40-year-old was taken to Dunedin Central Police Station where he was processed for excess breath-alcohol.
Several charges were likely, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.
