166 offences identified

A heavy motor vehicle operation run by police in response to alarming southern district highway statistics has identified 166 offences over a two-week period.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy said the most common offence was speeding and the figures included "heavy motor vehicles and other vehicle traffic".

The southern district was dramatically over-represented in crashes involving trucks, he said.

A total of 27 people died in crashes involving trucks in the district between January 1, 2006, and August 9, 2011.

A further 95 people were seriously injured.

Six people had died nationally so far this year in crashes involving trucks, he said.
