Win for law students

University of Otago law students Michael Blaschke and Sarah Baillie have won a recent annual New Zealand Law Foundation National Family Law Moot, adding to a stellar competitive year for Otago law students.

The Otago students competed against student teams from Auckland, Canterbury and Waikato universities in the moot, which was judged by senior family law practitioners Anita Chan and Rachel Cardoza.

The mooters were asked to advocate for parties embroiled in a Hague Convention case, involving a French-born Muslim child living in New Zealand.

The case involved her right to wear the hijab, a headscarf which covers the hair and often much of the face.

Otago law students have enjoyed considerable success in several other national or international law student competitions earlier this year, including gaining the best overall result by any university this year in annual law student competitions in Australia.
