A more than 10-year vision for an outdoor bowls surface next to the Dunedin Lawn Bowls Stadium has been delivered on time and within budget.

The new facility was built on part of the Chisholm Park Recreation Reserve and will host its first tournament later this month.

Project manager Grant Simpson said the idea for the arena was born 11 years ago, and solid work began to take off eight years ago.

To see the vision come to life made all the members extremely happy, he said.

"Older members sometimes can be a bit, ‘Oh, we’re leaving our history’, but they’re actually sort of excited by the whole thing, and I think the whole bowling community seems to be very keen to have a go," Mr Simpson said.

They had managed to get everything they wanted in the stadium and stay within the $1.9 million budget. The project was also delivered on time.

"Someone suggested I might like to take the job for project manager of the hospital," Mr Simpson joked.

He said many members had helped at different stages of the project, and it was the hard work of everyone that got it over the finish line.

"It had all been very, very positive," he said.

The cost of the build was covered by the sale of the Andersons Bay Bowling Club site in Bayfield Rd, and the bowling club and the stadium had merged.

Some finishing touches were to be made — including a shared toilet facility and the locker rooms — but the greens were ready to be bowled on.

There were one and a-half greens of artificial turf, or 12 rinks ready for year-round use.

"This means the bowls stadium itself can actually now be used all year round.

"We’ll use it as our clubrooms in the summer, and use the indoor facilities in the winter ... this will now mean bowls will be able to be played 12 months of the year."
