Court action avoided

Court action to force Silver Fern Farms to hold a special general meeting has been abandoned after the meat company and meat industry ginger group reached an agreement.

The meeting called by shareholders via the Meat Industry Action Group would now be held on October 7, but if the September 8 vote on the proposed merger between SFF and PGG Wrightson succeeds, PGG Wrightson has agreed not to vote in the group's resolutions at the later meeting.

Action group chairman John Gregan said this would leave farmers free to vote on the 11 resolutions proposed by the group, designed to encourage a merger between SFF and Alliance Group.

A similar meeting has been called for Alliance Group shareholders on September 5 at the Invercargill Workingmen's Club at 10.30am.
