Tips lead to arrest over Rotorua assault

People from as far away as Australia have helped track down a young woman who allegedly dragged another woman from a central Rotorua store and attacked her last week.

After calls from members of the public, the Rotorua woman allegedly responsible for the Pukuatua St attack last Wednesday morning has been arrested.

She will appear in the Rotorua District Court this week.

The assault allegedly involved a woman being verbally abused, then dragged from a dairy in the central city and attacked.

The victim was kicked and stomped on in front of about 20 people, including children, about 10.30am.

The incident prompted an angry reaction from members of the public, many of them upset that nobody stepped in to stop the attack.

Acting Senior Sergeant Mike Membery of the Rotorua police said a woman was arrested about 5pm yesterday in relation to the attack.

Mr Membery said police had received several calls from members of the public who had identified the woman.

"We even had calls from Australia from people who recognised her,'' Mr Membery said.

"This information all came from leads from members of the public which is great.

"We want to thank all the members of the public who have come forward with information on this,'' he said.

The arrested woman was due to appear in court facing a charge of assault today.

The central city attack was the second to feature in The Daily Post last week.

The first was a video featuring three women in a scuffle with Countdown Rotorua staff who were allegedly kicked and hit on the head as they tried to take bags from the women as they were leaving the supermarket.

Two Rotorua women - aged 30 and 50 - were charged with aggravated assault and theft relating to the incident at the Fenton St supermarket on January 4.

The pair were due to appear in the Rotorua District Court today.
