Firefighters are continuing to battle a large blaze at Warehouse Stationery in central Hamilton this morning.
Northern fire communications spokesman Scott Osmond said crews were called to the Ulster St, Whitiora blaze about 8.50am.
It's believed the fire began in a light fitting and moved to the roof.
Senior Station Officer Mark Tinworth said the building was well ablaze when firefighters arrived.
He said the fire was initially contained in the storage area by firefighters equipped with hoses and breathing apparatus.
Although no flames can be seen, smoke billowing from the building has increased since the Fire Service arrived.
Firefighters are cutting holes in the roof to try to release more smoke.
Part of Liverpool St behind the building has been cordoned off.
The Warehouse Stationery building adjoins a Briscoes shop and both stores have been closed.
Staff from both retailers and onlookers are milling around the scene of the fire.
Branch manager Alan Tate said there were about half a dozen staff in the store when smoke was first noticed about 8.45am. Everyone made it out safely.
