Tongan strongmen Don Lolo and Tui Katoa propelled Waitaki Boys' High School to a 49-0 win over James Hargest High School in Oamaru on Saturday.

Waitaki scored seven tries in an aggressive display against the Invercargill team that is playing in the Highlanders First XV competition for the first time this season.

Lolo, a towering lock, had a barnstorming game and put pressure on the James Hargest defence every time he had the ball.

Katoa, a rugged prop, was strong with the drive and the pick and go.

Waitaki attacked at every opportunity. It led 21-0 at the break.

First five-eighth Kane McLaughlan ran to the line to put pressure on the defence and set up play for his speedy outsides. He also kicked six conversions.

The most aggressive back was second five-eighth Levi Fogarty, who scored two tries.

He teamed in the midfield with centre Anthony Wetere-Sweet and the pair were able to cut through the defence.

It was a good day for Oamaru schools, as St Kevin's College beat Kavanagh College 24-20 to retain the Christian Brothers Trophy for the fifth year in a row.

The annual game between the two schools has been held since 1976.

Second five-eighth Tim O'Malley was the rock in the St Kevin's backline. He made the half-break to create opportunities for his pacey wings.

Nick Palaza and Michael Hannagan were dangerous with the ball and they both scored tries. Hooker Brad Clarke scored the other try.

Kavanagh led 15-0 in the first spell before St Kevin's scored 24 points in a dramatic 12-minute spell that began just before halftime.

Hooker Junior Pole scored four of Otago Boys' High School's 11 tries when South Otago High School was outclassed 71-5.

Aleki Morris ran strongly in the midfield to score two tries.

The best back on the field was halfback Josh Renton, who set the backline alight with his long passes and put pressure on the defence with his box kicks.

Lock Josh Dickson dominated the lineout and made 12 clean takes. His defence was also of a high standard.

King's High School kept itself at the top of the points table with an eight-try 57-7 romp over John McGlashan College. Right winger Aranui Crofts scored three tries.

The best player was flying fullback Mackenzie Haugh, who scored 25 points with two tries, six conversions and a penalty.

In other games, Dunstan High School drew with Gore High School 27-27, and Southland Boys' High School beat Menzies College 43-13.
