Jackson Bay plan soon

The first stage of a plan on how the tiny Westland settlement of Jackson Bay should be developed is expected to be completed within the next month.

A working party chaired by Westland District Council southern ward member John Birchfield, of Bruce Bay, is looking at new car and boat parking areas, helicopter landing facilities and use of the foreshore and reserves.

Mr Birchfield said a working party would meet next month to discuss a draft plan produced by council consultants.

Jackson Bay, 32km southwest of Haast, has only 10 houses and two permanent residents but in 2011 had 15,000 visitors.

In a report to the council, the consultants, MSH Architects Ltd, noted Jackson Bay had several "infrastructure design issues" which needed to be dealt with to allow it to grow.
