One person has died in a car crash on State Highway 1 south of Ashburton this afternoon.
The dead person, believed to be a male, is understood to have been the sole occupant of a ute that collided head-on with a stock truck and trailer unit shortly before 4pm.
Emergency services were at the scene and State Highway 1 was closed for some kilometres south of Tinwald.
It is understood the road would be closed for some hours.
Details on how the crash occurred on a straight piece of road were yet to be determined, but the Guardian understands the crash was head-on.
