Sunshine, smiles and busy crowds marked the launch of the new Clutha Country Sunday Markets in Balclutha yesterday.

Ten stallholders, selling everything from flowers to cheese, set up temporary shop in the Ryder's Paper Plus car park.

Organisers were pleased with the initial support from stallholders and the public who flocked to seek out bargains and fresh food.

Markets manager Sarah Gillies was impressed with the first day and believed it was the start of something big for the community.

Balclutha business group Big River Promotions runs the markets and its spokeswoman, Irene Mosley, was thrilled with the first effort.

She hoped the market would provide an extra attraction for Sunday mornings.

Each week, a community group will be given the chance to sell items for fund-raising.

The markets will run each Sunday, from 9am to 12.30pm.
