Enoch Carlisle, also known as Alex Crawley, 23, from “the Southland District”, died in the crash in the early hours of Sunday, March 22, when police signalled for a vehicle to stop in Kelvin St.
Southland area commander Inspector Mike Bowman said the driver failed to stop and then fled.
A short time later, it was discovered crashed at the intersection of Leet and Kelvin Sts.
Personal friend and Enoch’s funeral celebrant Lynley McKerrow said at his service he was a young man who lived his life in both the light and shade.
“There was goodness in him — it was a real and present goodness.
"There was also pain and sadness that he carried over the years — we do not ignore those things, but neither do they define him completely.”.
While there were questions which still needed to be answered, it was important he was not remembered as a single moment, but a whole person, she said.
Mr Carlisle's family said on a Givealittle page they were "suffering with the loss of a son, brother, uncle, dad, cousin".
"We understand that he may have had fallings out with people, or done some stuff in his life that people didnt like. But this isn't about him right now.
"This is for the family that have to say goodbye to him, and make our lives a little easier in this hard time."
Police said in a statement today they continued to investigate the crash.
Anyone who witnessed the crash, or have CCTV in the vicinity of Wellesley Avenue, Avenal Street or Kelvin Street, was asked to get in touch with police.
Reports could be made online on 105.
