Cricket: Stars come out but Otago not dazzled

Otago is not planning on spending the Champions League looking over its shoulder at its star-studded opposition.

Four years ago, the Volts were in awe of some of their big-name opponents.

But with 10 players from that squad returning for a second bid at glory in India, and a 10-game winning streak still very much alive, coach Vaughn Johnson is confident his side is better prepared, more experienced and more confident.

Otago will play three qualifying matches in a bid to reach the group stage. Its campaign gets under way against the Faisalabad Wolves on Tuesday.

''All the teams have got players with X-factor,'' Vaughn replied when asked about the quality of the teams his side was up against.

''Our first concern is about the Wolves and Misbah-ul-Haq and one or two other internationals in their team.

''But we have to make sure we are not worrying too much about the opposition and worrying about what we do.''

One of those ''one or two'' others internationals Johnson is no doubt concerned about is Saeed Ajmal. The 35-year-old is perhaps the world's leading spinner and certainly ranks inside the top three for bowling in all three formats of the game.

His doosra and subtle changes in flight and pace loom large as a major threat.

But with the Kandurata Maroons (Sri Lanka) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (India) presenting, on paper at least, as greater challenges, the Volts have stressed the importance of starting the qualifying series well.

''In a three-match series, if you can get up in the first one it takes a lot of pressure off. They are all important but we have to target the Wolves as a team we can beat.''

• Otago completed a successful week in Colombo with a 41-run win over a Sri Lankan selection side.

The Volts made 147 for seven. Neil Broom top-scored with 52. James Neesham chipped in with 22 and Nathan McCullum made 20.

Andy Solaman top-scored for the home side with 38. Neil Wagner, Nick Beard and McCullum took two wickets apiece.

Otago won all four warm-up games in its preparation for the Champions League.
