Indian rafter drowned - police

Police have confirmed that an Indian man who died following a rafting accident in Rotorua had drowned.

Madhukant Jhaveri, 65, died in Rotorua Hospital on November 5 after an incident at the Tutea Falls on the Kaituna River the day before, Detective Sergeant John Wilson said.

Mr Wilson told NZPA a post mortem examination found Jhaveri died as a result of drowning.

The finding was supported by the police investigation, he said.

At the time of the incident the Rotorua Daily Post reported Jhaveri was thrown from the raft and pulled back aboard after a short time in the water.

He collapsed about 10 minutes later.

It was believed Jhaveri was on the river with his wife, son, daughter, son-in-law and some friends.
