Tahuna Normal Intermediate has recently been able to install two new professional-grade basketball hoops on its indoor court thanks to a $4615 grant from the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT).
Principal and basketball co-ordinator Simon Clarke said replacing the previous hoops with the indoor ones meant they could ‘‘keep the game going safely and give students a much better experience’’.
‘‘Basketball is hugely popular at our school, and our hoops are used every day by students of all ages.’’
The previous hoops had become irreparably damaged over time — counterweights leaked causing safety concerns, and facilities were limited in winter due to the cold and reduced daylight.
Year 8 pupil Annabel Morrison said she was excited she could finally have ‘‘proper’’ games in their lunch break.
‘‘The old ones were broken and wobbly and sand fell out of the base when we moved them,’’ she said.
NZCT general manager of grants, marketing and communications Ben Hodges said they were happy to fund the school’s project as it got children active.
He thanked ‘‘the fundraising partnerships we share with Takeichi NZ and The Rope and Twine [through] their host responsible gaming lounges’’. — Allied Media
