A midwinter holiday break is being made easier for South Island passengers on a new flight direct from Christchurch to Rarotonga.

The first non-stop Air New Zealand flight will leave Christchurch this afternoon in a seasonal service operating up to three times a week through to late October.

The flights follow last week’s announcement of new Air New Zealand international routes from Christchurch to Singapore, Tokyo and Perth.

Christchurch Airport chief executive Justin Watson said the route was another addition to the airport’s growing international network.

‘‘Rarotonga has long been a favourite destination for South Islanders, and this new direct service makes getting there easier than ever.’’

Travellers could leave Christchurch in the afternoon and be enjoying tropical temperatures that same evening, he said in a statement.

The service will add about 19,600 seats between Christchurch and the Cook Islands across the season and is expected to strengthen tourism and travel connections between the South Island and the Pacific.

Return flights will depart Christchurch on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
