There is a sprinkling of Otago talent lapping up the Spanish waters this weekend.

But they will be wearing black as they represent New Zealand at the first stop of the world cup circuit in Seville, Spain, getting under way today.

Otago University rower Juliette Lequeux will race alongside Katie Lush (Waikato) in the women’s coxless pair, while former Otago and Bayfield rower Eva Hofmans, who now represents Waikato, and fellow Waikato rower Sophie Egnot-Johnson will compete in the women’s double scull.

Former Otago and Otago Boys’ rower Ben Mason, now rowing for Avon, will link up with national champion Finn Hamill (Waikato) again in the men’s double scull.

They were in sensational form on the world cup circuit last year, winning silver in Lucerne and settling for bronze in Varese after a photo-finish for second spot.

Former Otago University rower Fred Vavasour (Wairau) will link up with Waikato rowers Campbell Crouch and Joshua Vondanovich and Harry Fitzpatrick (West End) in the men’s coxless four.

Fellow former Otago University rower Oscar Ruston is also in action alongside his now Waikato clubmates Callum Tutbury and Ben Olifers, and Star rower Arie Magasiva, in the men’s quad.

The world cup circuit will stop in Plovidiv, Bulgaria, from June 12-14 and Lucerne, Switzerland, from June 26-28.

The season will then wrap up with the world championships in Amsterdam in August.
