Emergency services were called to Evans Pass Rd, in the suburb of Sumner, about 5.30pm on February 22 this year, following a report of a collision involving a car and a cyclist.
Huntsman, a 60-year-old aeronautical engineer and Coast to Coast instructor, was cycling when the crash happened near the intersection of Sumnervale Drive.
He was taken to Christchurch Hospital and placed in the intensive care unit with serious injuries, but died in hospital on March 4.
"Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones," a police spokesperson said in a statement today.
"Following a scene examination and further inquiries into the circumstances of the crash, Police have charged a 21-year-old man.
"He is due to appear in Christchurch District Court on 9 June, charged with dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop to ascertain injury."
