A relative Clutha newcomer, Miss Wainohu said the Carlines were like family: checking in regularly, driving her to appointments and shops and helping around her property.
She said the pair expected nothing in return.
Mr and Mrs Carline said a friendship between the families had grown naturally.
"Even after a whole day’s shearing, Regina’s son sometimes stops in to say ‘hello’ and mow our lawns," Mr Carline said.
Mrs Carline added, "I’ll call and say, ‘Don’t cook tonight because I’m bringing tea home for you.’ Next thing you know she’s gone all-out to make dessert for everybody. She’s brilliant."
