Eight decades of community service were celebrated when the Rotary Club of Balclutha marked its 80th anniversary with a commemorative charity evening on June 13.
Present and former members gathered to reflect on the club’s history, share memories and acknowledge Rotary’s contribution to Balclutha and the wider district.
The evening also raised nearly $600 for Balclutha Hato Hone St John, supporting its work in the local community.
Among the stories shared were memories of the club’s first female member, the late Joan Hasler, remembered for delivering phone books in her "granny wagon", organising generous working-bee smoko breaks, attending Rotary training events and making newcomers feel welcome.
Historic Rotary memorabilia, provided by Barry Willcocks, offered a glimpse into the club’s past and highlighted long-standing links with community organisations including Balclutha Scouts and South Otago High School.
Peter Vucetich opened the evening with a commemorative ode before guests heard from former Rotary District Governor Tania Lowery, who reflected on leading the district through the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The club also recognised its record of leadership within Rotary, having produced two District Governors.
Club secretary Christine Cutler thanked fellow members for helping stage the celebrations and said the anniversary recognised not only Rotary’s history but also its continuing role in the district.
