Retired V8 Supercar driver Greg Murphy cannot stay out of the car.
Murphy (43) was confirmed yesterday as an entrant in this year's Rally of Otago, on April 8-10.
The four-time Bathurst 1000 champion is going well back into the vehicle pool to get a drive.
Murphy will pilot a 2.3-litre 1979 Vauxhall Chevette, as opposed to the Ford Escort he has rallied in recent times. Murphy will be joined in the passenger seat by second-generation racer Mark Leonard, son of former sports-sedan ace Leo Leonard.
Having a New Zealand motor racing supremo such as Murphy in the field was sure to add plenty of interest to the event, Otago Rally spokesman Roger Oakley said.
‘‘Greg's long list of achievements are well documented, and we're thrilled to have him as part of this year's rally.''
Ineligible for the class for classics due to its fuel injection system, the Chevette will instead compete in the Allcomers class.
After retiring from fulltime V8 Supercars competition following a difficult 2012 season, then leaving the V8 co-driver fold at the end of 2014, Murphy has spent most of his time commentating for different broadcasters.
He has also made several appearances in rallying, including in last year's Canterbury Rally, and Rod Millen's Leadfoot Festival in the Coromandel Peninsula earlier this year.
