Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph has welcomed back several players from injury for his side's match against the Rebels in Melbourne on Saturday night.

Lock Joe Wheeler returns to the line-up after recovering from concussion symptoms and will partner Mark Reddish in the second row.

Loose forward Luke Whitelock also returns to the team and will start in the No 6 jersey. He missed last week's game against the Waratahs with a knee complaint.

Electric winger Patrick Osborne also returns to the team after overcoming a hip injury he picked up against the Lions a fortnight ago.

Joseph has named Jack Wilson on the opposite wing in what will be his debut for the Highlanders.

Wilson, who played for the Sharks last year, had a solid season for Otago in last year's national provincial competition, and gets a chance to impress with injured winger Waisake Naholo still out with a broken leg.

Joseph has also opted to give Ash Dixon a start at hooker, meaning Liam Coltman will have to come off the bench in his 51st match for the franchise.

Prop Craig Millar has been named on the bench for the first time this season.

In addition to Naholo, halfback Fumiaki Tanaka (calf) and utility back Matt Faddes (hamstring) were unavailable for selection.

Highlanders: Ben Smith (co-captain), Jack Wilson, Malakai Fekitoa, Rob Thompson, Patrick Osborne, Lima Sopoaga, Aaron Smith, Liam Squire, Shane Christie (co-captain), Luke Whitelock, Joe Wheeler, Mark Reddish, Siosiua Halanukonuka, Ash Dixon, Brendon Edmonds. Reserves: Liam Coltman, Craig Millar, Josh Hohneck, Dan Pryor, Elliot Dixon, Josh Renton, Hayden Parker, Jason Emery.
