In living memory . . .

Space-age technology was employed during a tar burn-off in Carr St, North East Valley, in December 1985.

The "de-slicker", which burns 100 litres of kerosene an hour at about 2000°C, has heat-resistant tiles like those used by Nasa on its launching pad.

A problem in laying the road stopped the tar from fully hardening and residents have tramped tar into their homes for more than a year.

Saturday’s burn-off of the excess tar should solve the problem.
