5.5 quake near Milford Sound

People across Central Otago awoke early today to tremors and rattles as a earthquake struck 60km north-east of Milford Sound.

The quake hit at 3.29am. GeoNet listed it as magnitude 5.5 and said it was 5km deep.

From Queenstown to Dunedin, more than 1000 people reported feeling the quake, some describing the shakes as strong, while most felt light judders.

A second quake in the same location was recorded 50 minutes later, at 4.21am - however at magnitude 1.5 GeoNet categorised it as “unnoticeable”.
