People across Central Otago awoke early today to tremors and rattles as a earthquake struck 60km north-east of Milford Sound.

The quake hit at 3.29am. GeoNet listed it as magnitude 5.5 and said it was 5km deep.

From Queenstown to Dunedin, more than 1000 people reported feeling the quake, some describing the shakes as strong, while most felt light judders.

A second quake in the same location was recorded 50 minutes later, at 4.21am - however at magnitude 1.5 GeoNet categorised it as “unnoticeable”.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
