Black ice warning for southern highways

Warnings are in place across the South as authorities urge care on state highways because of black ice.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi says area warnings are in effect for State Highway 1 Dunedin to Palmerston, State Highway 87 Outram to Kyeburn, and State Highway 85 Kyeburn to Palmerston.

Road users were asked to watch their speeds, to increase their following distances, and to avoid sudden braking or turning movements.

Ice was more likely to form in places such as bridges and shaded areas, and black ice could be harder to spot, NZTA said.
