Few take advantage of ECan information day

Few Waitaki Valley people took the chance yesterday to learn about resource management issues in in the Canterbury region, of which they are part.

Environment Canterbury (ECan) yesterday held an information day on its draft Regional Policy Statement.

But only half a dozen people turned up during the four and a-half hours two ECan staff were at the Lakes Centre with a display and information about the policy statement.

The draft statement will set the framework for resource management in Canterbury for the next 10 to 15 years.

ECan has called for submissions which close on December 3.

A policy statement will then be produced which will be publicly notified and go out for further comment early next year.

"That will give people a second bite of the cherry," ECan consultant Frank Stewart said yesterday.

This is the third of 10 information days being held throughout the Canterbury region.

The next is today, in Waimate at the district council offices.

Others in the southern area will be at Fairlie, in the Mackenzie District Council offices on Tuesday, October 19 and Timaru, at ECan's offices on Thursday, October 21.

The draft policy statement follows four years of development, including extensive consultation with Canterbury local authorities, Ngai Tahu, and key stakeholders.
