A $1 million Lotto win by a player in Alexandra on Saturday was "pretty exciting for the town", Alexandra New World grocery manager Richard McDonald said yesterday.
"Lots of visitors are in town at the moment; I suppose it could be anyone," Mr McDonald added.
He was not aware of who had bought the winning ticket and did not "know if anyone has come in" with the ticket, which had been bought at the supermarket.
There had been "a lot of talk" about the big win among some supermarket staff yesterday morning.
"I think it’s great," Mr McDonald said.
The win would also be positive for the community and for the supermarket’s reputation as a "lucky store", he said.
Alexandra Blossom Festival event manager and Vincent Community Board chairman Martin McPherson said Alexandra was in "good heart", was full of holiday-making visitors and people were also happy to think that a big prize may have gone to a local person.
In August last year a Central Otago Lotto player, believed to be from Omakau, bagged the biggest Powerball prize in the South Island, walking away with $22.3 million after buying a ticket online.
Strike 4 was also won on Saturday by a player from Auckland, who took home $200,000.
The top Powerball prize was not struck and will roll over to Wednesday night, when the jackpot will be $6million.
