The Teviot Valley's oldest resident, Lily Gall, celebrated her 105th birthday yesterday.

Miss Gall lived independently in her own home at Ettrick before moving into the Teviot Valley Rest Home in Roxburgh last September.

She declined an interview with the Otago Daily Times yesterday, preferring "no fuss" on her birthday.

The milestone was marked with a special afternoon tea at the rest-home, attended by her niece, other family members and friends.

Miss Gall grew up in Momona and attended Otago Girls' High School.

She took up nursing and her career spanned 30 years, mostly based at Seddon Memorial Hospital, Gore Hospital's predecessor.

When she retired at the age of 65, she was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to nursing.

Two years later, she moved to Ettrick to look after her younger sister, who was ill.

Miss Gall took up golf at the age of 67 and played the sport until well into her 90s.

She kept in good health, family members said, and her mind was "sharp as a tack".
