$2.8m water supply upgrade set to start

Work on a $2.8million upgrade of Arrowtown's water supply is set to start on Monday.

A Queenstown Lakes District Council media statement said the upgrade, expected to be completed in December, would increase the township's capacity and improve water quality.

Two new bores were drilled in the Bush Creek car park in Buckingham St last December, and one was temporarily connected to the network to ensure enough supply last summer.

Council media adviser Jack Barlow said the latest project included the completion of that bore, with most of the work centred on building an enclosure for it.

For the second bore, above-ground head works would be installed and an enclosure built.

Trenched pipelines would be installed to connect the new supply to the network, including a 300m-long pipeline from the bores to the existing reservoir.

"Due to the larger pumps required to meet the current and future water demand, the electrical supply has to be increased as well," Mr Barlow said.

A new switchboard building would be built to house electrical and communications equipment.

The project would require the closure of the footbridge to the Macetown and Saw Pit Gully walking tracks, but temporary bridges would allow continued access.
