Macy Mae Patscharis, 13, said she had been visiting the Teviot Valley Rest Home, in Roxburgh, at least once a week for most of the year.
During school holidays she pops in more frequently.
"I have had a interest in visiting and spending time with older people since I was young," Macy Mae said.
Her own grandmother lives close to Macy Mae and their extended family.
"However, she was aware many people did not have family and friends living nearby.
"I enjoy making people feel wanted and valued, that they are not forgotten."
During her weekly after-school visits she played board games, did jigsaws, took people for walks, painted their nails or just chatted with the residents.
"Everyone is so interesting."
A friendship has developed between Macy Mae and 92-year-old Katharine McQueen, who was sporting a glamorous manicure when the CO News visited.
Mrs McQueen’s daughter Sarah Lennon said her mother had been living at the rest-home since the April last year.
Prior to that she had lived in Roxburgh for about 20 years after moving from a farm in the Waikaka area.
"The rest-home has been so caring and thoughtful. We are very grateful to have it in the valley. Mum always seems very happy and content. I am also grateful to Macy for visiting," Mrs Lennon said.
The residents especially enjoyed seeing photos and videos of Macy Mae riding and working with her horses, she said.
Macy Mae said her visits were just something she wanted to do. She was not accruing credits for any awards from it.
"I genuinely love it."
