Arrests after search finds drugs, firearm

A 29-year-old man and 20-year-old woman will appear in the Dunedin District Court today on drugs and firearms charges after police yesterday seized methamphetamine, cash and an illegal firearm from an Alexandra property.

The pair, who both have interim name suppression, appeared before a registrar in the Alexandra District Court yesterday afternoon and were remanded in custody overnight.

Police had searched a Centennial Ave property at 6.45am yesterday and seized ''a substantial amount'' of cash, several grams of methamphetamine, an illegal firearm and a loaded magazine, Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron said.

The search warrant and subsequent arrests occurred without incident, Det Sgt Cameron said.

Temporary road blocks were put in place as the armed offenders squad secured the premises near the intersection of Centennial Ave and Killarney St. However, the disruption to traffic was minimal, a police spokeswoman said.

Three people were arrested and the two who appeared in court were charged with possession for supply of methamphetamine, possession for supply of cannabis and unlawful possession of a restricted firearm.

The other person was released without charge.
