The Alexandra community could get astroturf tennis courts at Pioneer Park after all - but the modern surface comes at a price.

The Vincent Community Board yesterday voted to change part of a resolution, which would have resulted in three asphalt courts replacing the existing six courts at Pioneer Park.

The board reduced the number of courts to two, but with an astroturf surface after discussing the options for more than an hour.

The board will put $60,000 towards the cost from the general development fund, but the community would have to raise the rest.

Some board members said that could be as much as $200,000.

Chairwoman Clair Higginson had asked for the change as she had received numerous approaches from members of the community unhappy with the decision to use asphalt.

Social users of the courts had said they would come back to play at Pioneer Park if they had astroturf courts and Alexandra youngsters had also been pushing for a social area for tennis, volleyball and other recreational sports, she said.

The Long Term Council Community Plan contained a resolution from the previous Alexandra Community Board, which proposed to replace the asphalt courts with an astroturf surface, Ms Higginson said.

Her motion to resurface three courts with astroturf was lost 4-1 and a second motion for two courts passed 4-1.
