Chance to have say on Molyneux Park plans

The public can air their views on plans for the redevelopment of Alexandra's Molyneux Park tomorrow.

A meeting is being held at the Alexandra Community Centre, starting at 5.30pm.

A series of designs for the redevelopment of the 28ha park were unveiled to 30 user groups in late January.

The estimated cost of the project ranged from $4 million to $10.4 million, depending on what elements were included.

The Vincent Community Board commissioned Beca Carter Hollings and Ferner Ltd (Beca) to undertake the study last year, to assess the present and long-term provision and use of recreational facilities in the park.

The first major part of that project is landscaping, working towards creating a hub.

This has been included in the Central Otago District Council's draft long-term council community plan (LTCCP), which was released for public consultation on April 2.

Vincent Community Board chairwoman Clair Higginson said the study was a key starting point to generate discussion.

"We want to hear people's views about their preferences for the park while at the same time provide the community with enough information for them to make considered submissions on the proposal," Ms Higginson said.

The public could make submissions through the LTCCP process, she said.

A working party was initially looking at upgrading Molyneux Stadium but it was decided the stadium no longer met the needs of user groups and would cost too much to refurbish.

That was the catalyst for the study into the redevelopment of the whole park.
