Cromwell Lake Dunstan Lions Club president Sylvia Giles said this was the fifth year the event had been run and each year the turnout had been improving, as more people came in to have a look and give.
"We’ve been really pleased with the turnout."
The Christmas trees were rented to organisations across the district for $50 a tree.
The organisations then select a charity they wish to give to and decorate the trees.
People would then come in and vote for their favourite by putting money into a bucket at the bottom of each tree.
The money gathered in the buckets goes to the charity chosen by the organisation who decorated the tree, and the tree with the most donations would win a trophy, she said.
As well as voting for the best tree, visitors could give by entering raffles or buying plants.
The club not only hoped to match the amount raised for charity after a very successful event last year, but better it.
A lot of work was involved with getting the event ready and project conveners Ngaire Andrews and Elaine Connelly did an absolutely amazing job, she said.
