With spring in the air, some Clutha residents have been wondering why their verges have not been mowed.
Earlier this year, the Clutha District Council reviewed its berm mowing and determined it would only mow most verges when the grass is very long.
District assets manager Jules Witt said the change in mowing guidelines was approved by the council in May following a public consultation and submission process.
The amount of mowing in recent years has grown, taking $105,000 of the total $635,000 Parks and Reserves budget for 2010-11.
The change in guidelines aimed to keep costs to ratepayers down and make it fair for the majority of people who already mowed the verges outside their property.
Mr Witt said council would "weed-eat" all other verges, but only when the grass height reached about 500mm.
